Translation of Personal Documents

I have experience translating the following document types from German to English:

  • Pleadings, rulings, judgments
  • Evidentiary documents
  • Divorce and custody papers
  • Vital records
  • Emigration documents, passports
  • Wills, inventories, property transfers
  • Powers of attorney
  • Academic transcripts, degrees, certificates
  • Licenses
  • Police reports

If translations are needed for official purposes, I will certify my own work. However, I do not certify the work of other translators or translations made by clients. Most of my experience has been with Swiss and German documents, less with Austrian.

Related Services

  • Transcription of handwritten German documents
  • Copyediting and proofreading of translated documents

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take?

I can often fill small requests within a day or two of receiving them, larger ones within a week or two. However, the turnaround time depends on my availability and current backlog. If you have a critical deadline, please contact me in advance to make sure that I can meet it.

What will it cost?

The cost of your project will ultimately depend on the time it takes; and this, in turn, is dependent on length, legibility, quality and level of the language in the source text, special formatting requirements, etc. To quote a price, I need to see the source text.

Do you also translate from English to German?

Rarely. Most translators do their best work going into their native language. While I occasionally translate personal letters into German, I refer all other into-German work to qualified native speakers.

Do you also interpret?

No. Interpretation (the oral rendering of speech from one language to another) is a specialized skill quite different from translation. I work with the written word exclusively.

What are your qualifications?

(Actually this is not a frequently asked question, but it should be.) For my professional background, please click on Résumé at left. My experience in legal translation includes projects for the federal district court, law firms, heir-locating firms, companies doing international business, and translation companies, as well as private individuals.
