What you can expect from me

Attention to detail

A good translation reads like an English original but reflects the style of the source text. Minor errors in the source document (typos, grammar) are silently corrected. Problems in the original that could affect the translation are called to your attention.

Completeness and accuracy

A good translation communicates the entire content of the source text in a style and register appropriate for the intended reader. If questions of meaning remain unresolved, I will call them to your attention. Additions needed for cross-cultural understanding may be embedded in the text, if appropriate, or given in footnotes. When the source text is handwritten, I normally provide a line-by-line transcription along with the translation.

Adherence to delivery schedule and specifications

I usually have a backlog, but I make every effort to accommodate special requests and deadlines. I normally do larger jobs in the order received but set aside time each week for working in small, fast-turnaround jobs as well. Translations are normally delivered via e-mail as Word documents, but I also provide PDFs or hard copy upon request.

What I need from you

A clear work order in writing

Specify what you would like translated, the target readership or intended use, any special format requirements, when and how you would like it delivered, and how I can reach you if I have questions. Delivery and payment terms agreed upon orally should be confirmed in writing.

Reference material and background information

While terminology research and verification is part of a translatorŐs job, supporting documentation can often save time. For handwritten source documents, where legibility may be an issue, please share any relevant information you already know, such as names, relationships, and locations.

Payment terms

I can estimate cost on the basis of sample pages and a project description, but for a binding quote, I must see the entire text to be translated. You have up to 30 days to accept an offer. Payment is due upon delivery of the translation and deemed late after 30 days. I accept personal checks or credit card payments via PayPal.
